113 First Aid MarcViljoen This year the FA society has grown with many new learners enrolling to do the Level one course which was held in April. Our Chair- persons, Olwethu Mtalana and Anika van der Walt, have organised and communicated tire- lessly to ensure that our society is always ready for the next event. Our highlights for the year so far was the Running Bounds and the College Rugby Festival. Also, by commit- ting to first aid for school matches, the learn - ers have an opportunity to accumulate ser- vice hours if they are working towards the President’s Award or to count towards their Service points when they volunteer. Flashmob Richard Pentz Learners volunteer to take photographs and videos at various College events. These are used at assemblies, on social media and for blogs, newsletters and the magazine. We are excited about the young learners who join the club, as they have time to develop their skills to take on bigger responsibilities when they become seniors. Immediate and rel- evant news reporting is the way to go and the flashmob team is working hard to meet the expectations. Apart from the obvious fun the members are having, they are also learning valuable skills in the Parklands Studios which will stand them in good stead in the future. Green Solutions Ivana Schäfer Green Solutions Club is dedicated to creating awareness of our environment by finding ap - propriate solutions to eco problems present in our immediate day to day lives. Through creating opportunities to interact and help our environment with each event arranged, we are growing responsible individuals with a care for how they leave the environment and with a desire to do and learn more about it. Highlights of the year include the Milnerton beach clean-up and the Speak Green audio awareness competition with prizes spon- sored by the Two Oceans Aquarium. The club gives speeches and regularly shows videos in Friday assemblies to increase aware- ness of current environmental news and im- portant days, such as decreasing pollution and World Lion Day. Interact CourtneyVanWyk This year Interact has made a difference in various places. The year kicked off with a Cancer Ribbon Drive and donations de- livered to SANCCOB to help the starving flamingo chicks. We visitedVaatjie Primary school where we distributed Marshmal- low Eggs and read books to the children as well as making 100 food parcels for them when they went on theirWaterfront Outing. We also visited Huis Zonnekus and handed out baked goods and spent some time with the elderly people, as well as performed in a concert at the Cheshire Home. On Slipper Day we collected over R5000 for Reach for a Dream. During Au- gust Awareness Month we got the whole school involved in our charity drive and ended the year with planning our involve- ment in various end-of-year parties for those less privileged. Lab Assistants Bonolo Duma At the beginning of the year, the Lab As- sistants were taken on a tour around the Science labs and shown the various chemicals. This was followed by les- sons on safety in the lab. Then came the fun part, where they had to dis- sect a sheep kidney and they used a kidney model to guide them. They also got an opportunity to create their own lithium and that was a perfect opportunity to introduce to them the Moles calculation, which will be benefi - cial for them in the future when we will be making more chemicals. We also had the privilege of visiting the University of Cape Towns’ Chemical Engineering De- partment during Science week, where we got to see the electron microscope and learners got to make their own fuel cell with the professors in the depart- ment. Lab Assistants continue to play an important role in the practical work of the Science Department. MakerLife Carike Cass Makerspaces, sometimes also referred to as hackerspaces, ‘hackspaces’, and fablabs, are creative, DIY spaces where learners can gather to create, invent, and learn. This is an informal space with a relaxed and harmonious atmosphere. Learners get the opportunity to explore the use of 3D printing and hardware supplies and tools. This is an exciting place and space for learners to visualise, idealise and be crea- tive in a creative hub. In MakerLife Club this year, learners have been experiment- ing with 3D printing. They have learned how to design on iPad and their own de- signs were printed with 3D printers.
