Magazine 2018

Twenty years ago, in 1998, Google was established as a private company in California, France hosted the FIFA World Cup and won it for the first time, the movie Titanic won 11 Oscars at the Academy Awards and became the first movie to gross over 1 billion dollars… and Parklands College and Christopher Robin Pre-Primary opened its doors on the West Coast. Since then Google has become our favourite search engine, South Africa has hosted the FIFA World Cup – who would have thought? – and Titanic has become a distant memory. Parklands College and Christopher Robin Pre- Primary has grown from one building on one campus to multiple buildings on three campuses and from 50 learners to way over a 1000. It has been a fantastic journey over two decades and we are most proud of what we have achieved in a relatively short period of time. Over the past year our commitment to striving for excellence has manifested in a multitude of team and individual achievements in all spheres, from outstanding academic results and top rankings in Olympiads, Expos and competitions locally as well as internationally, to ever-improving sports results, huge accolades for our dancers, musicians and actors while also making a difference in the lives of those less fortunate than we are. 2018 was also a year of firsts: We had our first multi-sport tour for U16 and U19 players of rugby, netball and soccer during the April school holidays and hosted the first Parklands-Reddam Derby in August. We entered into an exclusive relationship with the Gary Kirsten Cricket Academy and we hosted the massive West Coast Rugby and Netball Festival with success. To top it all, in September we saw the turning of the first sod of the Learning Innovation Centre under construction. This school, without a doubt, has something to offer for every learner and for those who want to take it a step further, all the support is right here. Our staff will willingly go the extra mile, as they enjoy what they do, feel stimulated by the environment and find satisfaction in their own professional growth. Thank you to each and everyone for the difference you make in the lives of the young people in our care. Well done to every learner on the year behind you, thank you to every parent for your unwavering support and salutations to the team of staff at the College on your delivery this year. Finally, we cannot end any year without expressing our gratitude to the Board of Directors and especially the Managing Director, Mrs Roth, for all the opportunities afforded us. Wishing you all a peaceful Festive Season and a successful year ahead. “ T he world is full of magical things patiently waiting for our wits to grow sharper.” - Bertrand Russell (Nobel Laureate) Secondary Faculty Principal Sylvia Steyn 96. 21st Edition
