Magazine 2018

Learner Affairs Caleigh Wehmeyer, Melisa Mbero and Zoë Van Rooyen, our Learner Affairs prefects, have had a tough and long term of office. Learner affairs is not about the glitz and the glamour, but rather about the hard work and trying to lay the path for the rest of the learners to follow. They have been involved in different learner affairs events and have always given their all by leading from the front, while at the same time not being afraid to work hard to achieve their objectives. Whether it is assisting in trying to maintain and uphold the College Dress and Grooming regulations, working with the Class Representatives, from training to appraisals, the Inter-Grade war cries or putting together the programme for the Orientation Day for all new learners, they have consistently worked to ensure that all aspects were taken care of ran smoothly. These young ladies can be proud of all that they have achieved, just as we are very proud of the leaders and prefects that they were this year. – Jayshree Pillay Technology Our Technology Prefects, Stephan Cilliers and Sarika Naidoo, have played very diverse roles this year. We could always rely on them to manage any technical requirements at the many events at the College, but it is the support they have given to others that has stood out. Stephan trained his peers in Mobile Application Development, while Sarike supported and advised the Robotics teams on the requirements for the various competitions. They also supported our talented gamers and the Question Point members who assist learners with technological queries. Special mention must be made of their involvement in training new learners to the College before the start of the new year. They have done a great job and set the bar high for this portfolio. – Paul Mayers Culture Meritxell Cilliers and Murray Fogg have unequivocally led through example this year as Culture Prefects. Both of these talent young people have performed on numerous occasions; either as a public speaker, dancer, musician and actor at assemblies, and representing the College further afield at the Public Speaking World Championships, at The Baxter Theatre in a production of Twelfth Night, at the Cape Town Modern Dance and Speech and Drama Eisteddfods winning their category outright in the latter. They have entertained us and have been true ambassadors for Culture at the College. – Catherine Dodders Sport Jamie and Connor have embraced their roles as Sport Prefects and have been very active in promoting and raising the profile of Sport at the College. Together they initiated the Parklands College monthly sports award. The sportsmen and sportswomen at the College appreciated their attendance at many sports fixtures. They have been an asset to the sports department and their legacy will be a hard act to follow for next year’s prefect body. – Thanersen Pillay Houses Harley Moriarty and Nicholas Nesbitt set the bar high for building school spirit through healthy competition between Cambridge, Harvard, Oxford and Yale. Leading by example, they inspired the House Captains to come up with creative themes and original war cries. One of the annual highlights and probably the most stressful event for House Captains, is the evening of House Plays. This year we were once again entertained with outstanding original plays. The drought hampered some traditional Inter-House events, but the House Spirit survived it all. – Thanersen Pillay Clubs and Societies Mia Brown and Tara Grobbelaar embraced their role as Clubs and Societies prefects for 2018 with full vigour and enthusiasm. From brilliantly coordinating the annual Clubs and Societies' Introductory Assembly, to spearheading new initiatives like the College’s Clubs and Societies tuckshop noticeboard, they have both served and lead their peers by effectively coordinating our College’s multifaceted co-curricular programme. – Dean Flanagan Co-opted: Equity and Diversity Representatives Ursulla Munyange and Scott Moreau were co-opted onto the leadership team this year to launch a new, very significant portfolio, which will in future form a part of the prefect body. From arranging a forum discussion to hosting a “soap box” discussion in Curie Quad to filming a revolving debate about a topical issue, they have contributed to encouraging difficult conversations. – Sylvia Steyn Conclusion Thank you to all the educators for your support and encouragement throughout the year. We are very proud of the Class of 2018 who managed to raise enough money to pay for new mascots for the College and also donate R10 000 to charity. – Nina Rossouw and Frank Smuts 187. parklands.co.za
