Grade 9, Careers Workshop Grade 7 - Elevate Education Study Skills On the 17th of May, all of the Grade 7s attended a “Study Skills: Kick Start” workshop, that was facilitated by Elevate Education. At the workshop learners were taught dynamic reading skills, how to make notes according to the Cornell note taking system and steps to condensing information into mind maps. Learners and parents were subsequently provided with an implementation guide that contained follow-up exercises and activities as well as tips for putting their newly acquired study skills into practice. Grade 9 Subject Choices Grade 9 is a very important year, as learners need to make decisions about subject choices that influence their tertiary study opportunities and future careers. In conjunction with the Life Orientation Department, the College provides learners and parents with various resources to guide them through the decision making process. The Subject Choice Evening is a highlight on the Grade 9 calendar. The parents and learners attend an informative talk that encourages learners to take their individual strengths into consideration when choosing subjects. Thereafter, parents and learners are invited to attend a subject exhibition where educators are available to provide information or answer any questions about the range of subjects on offer at the College. On the 20th of June, the Grade 9 group took part in a Career Education Workshop facilitated by past learner, Nicci Esterhuizen. Nicci studied Industrial Psychology and has a special interest in career guidance education. Learners were given a preference questionnaire to help them gain greater personal insight into their unique preferences. They also learnt about different personality types and were given the opportunity to explore different career paths that are in line with the different personality types. As part of the preparation for choosing subjects, learners were also given valuable information about tertiary institutions and the different qualifications available at these institutions. The workshop provided learners with knowledge that helped them to make informed subject choices for the FET phase of their school careers. 2. 3. 165. parklands.co.za
