PREPARATORY ICT Barbara Brand and Lee-ann Steynberg Jenny Arledge said: “Technology can become the ‘wings’ that will allow the educational world to fly farther and faster than ever before, if we allow it.” We couldn’t agree more! Technology is a powerful tool that gives even the quietest learners a voice. Our innovative educators are constantly striving to integrate the iPad effortlessly into the classroom. This exciting journey begins in Grade One where learners first encounter the iPad as more than a device on which they can play games but as a way to express their inner creativity for the world to see. Taking and editing photos becomes a lifelong skill, and when combined with Book Creator, they become authors and collaborators. Our young authors move on to Grade Two where they become the stars of their own Movies and Animations. Combine these with their musical abilities, brought to the fore with GarageBand, they are on their way to future Oscar nominations. Once the learners reach Grade Three, the exposure to a wide range of apps allows for transformation of both learning and teaching experiences. They delve into a world of ‘app smashing’ where they effortlessly use a variety of apps in order to complete tasks. Their range of skills is varied and their motivation for sharing their learning with an authentic audience is high. The adventure continues through Grade Four to Six where learners begin to hone their skills to make an impact on the world around them, be it creating THINK posters to promote positive self-esteem, posting book reviews for authors’ comments, or learning to code in order to create their own apps. Creating tutorials to share with their peers, interviews with those in leadership positions, and using green screening to create movie effects are a part of the everyday lessons.
