Magazine 2017

You hear about this from previous matrics, but you really have to be there to understand what it is like – the “nappy run”, the hike up the mountain to see the most glorious view of the river (that you can imagine), the sun on your skin and the quiet- ness… The matrics realised that this would be the last time they could all be spending time together in such a relaxed way and treasured every moment. The 2017 Grade Camp Week again reiterated the importance and value of outdoor education. Our learners are equipped with life-long skills which will stand them in good stead wherever the road may take them, while at the same time forging friendships to last a lifetime. The planning for 2018 started the very next week after everyone was back at school, because we always strive for better. The Grade 11 Camp is the most physIcally challenging of all the grade camps and a fitting way to start the final preparation for taking over the reigns of learner leadership at the College. The group travelled to Clanwilliam where they were divided into three groups. Every day the groups rotate in order for everyone to get the maximum opportunity to experience the various challenges. The group members learn to ecourage and rely on each other and to push themselves beyond their imagination. The activi- ties include hiking, moutain biking, rowing and – everyone’s favourite – wa- ter sports activities. Most of the activities take place around the beatiful dam and one cannot help but to be affected by the beauty of nature around you. The Grade 11s left Clanwilliam with many new skills, beautiful memories and strong friendship bonds to take on the year ahead. Grade 11 Grade 12 Six years of attending grade camps finally culminates in the very special Grade 12 annual excursion to the Orange River and the Bundi campsite in Namibia. It is a 10 hour bus drive to get there, but once you have been through the safety drills and you and you partner start paddling through the majestic surroundings of the river, peace sets in. It is a special experience to float alongside others in or outside the boat, having deep conversations about life and the future and then to occasionally do something ridiculous like jumping into the river from a high rock! The unique rock formations, the limitless stars and the peacefulness of being out in nature leave unforgettable impressions on the minds of all who are privileged enough to experience this. 151 www.parklands.co.za
