○ FET Music Evenings This quarter our FET Subject Music learners treated us to two fantastic evenings of music. Each learner performed one piece, which also formed a part of their yearly CAPS Assessment mark. A wide variety of items were presented; from Baroque to Rock and everything in between. Congratulations to the following learners who showcased their talent: Frank Smuts, Louis Bosch, Murray Fogg, Adam Knoesen, Meritxell Cilliers, Cameron Benny, Filippo Cortese, Ilse Thomas, Adam Colley, Thomas Dassé, Gregory Bosch, Daniella Mizrachi, Isabella Inglese, Bruna Fontes, Lindsay Friday and Zintle Mayaphi. Special thanks to all those family members and friends who showed their support, to Mr Clayton and Mr Swanepoel for their musical accompaniment and to Mrs Nock and Mr Flanagan for their organisation. ○ Outings FET music learners attended a CTPO dress rehearsal at the Cape Town City Hall this quarter. The Orchestra performed the Khachaturian Violin Concerto and Petrushka by Stravinsky. The Grade 7 music class attended a performance of Grease at the Baxter theatre. Everyone who attended felt uplifted by the performance and could sing along with the iconic musical numbers. ○ Stirling High School Visit The Jazz Band from Stirling High School in East London visited Parklands College this quarter. They gave a joint performance with our own Jazz Band and the audience was blown away by the magnificent Jazz sounds. What makes this event even more special is that our Jazz Band director, Mr Dean Flanagan, is a past pupil of Stirling and was able to conduct alongside his teacher and mentor, Mr Alan Webster. We truly value these school visits and exposure. ○ Trinity examinations: May sitting We congratulate our Trinity candidates who performed their external practical examinations in the May sitting. The examinations took place at the Hugo Lambrechts Music School and the candidates were: Gregory Bosch, Frank Smuts, Stephan Cilliers, Likhona Mbovane, Tara Goliath and Tylà Fourie. Thank you to Mr Johan Swanepoel and Mrs Rozanne Jordan for accompanying our learners. ○ Woodworx Marimba Festival Our Senior and Junior Marimba Bands participated in the annual Woodworx Marimba Festival in May. The festival was held at the Baxter and our bands made us proud. The Senior Band was given opportunity to perform a solo and performed their rendition of Billie Jean . Mr Grant Adams gave the Matrics in the band a lovely send off by paying tribute to them after their item. Our Junior Band performed as part of the mass item at the end of the evening. ○ Music Workshops: Opposite the Other The Cape Town band, Opposite the Other, spent a morning with our music learners on Monday 29th May engaging in workshops, Q&A sessions and performances. It was a wonderful day as our musicians learnt about the music industry, songwriting, recording, live performances and a host of other tips from the band. Opposite the Other was a pleasure to host and did a brilliant job of sharing their music and experiences with us over the 3.5 hours we spent with them. Thanks goes to our Mr Dean Flanagan for coordinating the workshops and a special congratulations to all those learners who performed. 129 www.parklands.co.za
