Magazine 2017
They unfortunately lost by 1 point against St. Cyprian’s after a nail biting match. This was an intense game and both teams played outstanding netball. Congratulations to Jamie Turnbull, our first team captain, who was nominated as “best shooter” of the festival by all the visiting coaches. We are already looking forward to next year’s festival where we aim to increase the number of participating schools and push the bar even higher. Our U/13 A Rugby team participated at the St Stithian's Sports Festival, one of the biggest sporting events in the country, hosting 20 rugby teams from well respected and traditional sporting schools in South Africa. Parklands College was invited to this prestigious event for the first time in 2017 and attended the festival with an U/13A rugby team. The event not only created the opportunity for our teams to compete at a top level against new opposition, but also to connect and establish new friendships with players from participating schools. All our rugby boys demonstrated good sportsmanship and teamwork, achieving outstanding results against highly respected sporting schools. The U/13 A rugby boys impressed the large crowd of spectators at the Festival with their attractive style of rugby, winning all of their matches against the opposing teams from Howick Preparatory (19 - 10), Woodridge Preparatory (24 - 10) and Heronbridge Preparatory (47 - 5). WEEKLY FIXTURES All our sporting teams continue to grow and are entered into school leagues. We participate in the structured inter-school leagues where all the results are recorded and published in the weekly memo sent out every week. After every game a “player of the match” is nominated by the coach and manager and these learners are acknowledged by the Head of Sport at our weekly assemblies. All other excellent achievements are recognised and acknowledged at our various awards events. SPORTING CODES We are pleased that so many of our learners actively participate in a summer and winter sporting code - there are some learners who participate in as many as three summer sports and three winter sports. CRICKET Cricket had a memorable season with all our teams faring well and some individuals achieving outstanding performances. Daniel Crowley scored 132 and Darian Naidoo 116 (not out) both against Tygerberg. Nicholas Hanel and Sheldon Stanley both took 5 wickets and Nthato Digojane had a 7 wicket haul. For the second year in a row we invited our Past Learners back to the College to play cricket against the College 1st XI and educators. Two very exciting matches were played with lots of entertainment all round. We are very proud of Darian Naidoo who was selected for the Western Province U/15B team and of the following players who were selected for the District North Zonal team: Chris Strydom, Sheldon Stanley and David Wood. Parklands College has teamed up with Gary Kirsten and the GK Academy to bring quality cricket coaching to the West Coast. Gary also supported us in hosting the first T20Quadrangular in September. The future of cricket certainlylooks bright. CROSS COUNTRY Our Cross Country season started well with many of our learners once again being placed in the top 20 at the weekly league events. Deon and Carla Bochnig (grade 7), Jade Bremner (grade 9) and Tara Pohl (grade 11), have also been placed in the top 10 at these events, with Tara Pohl taking first position at the Malibu High League Race on 3 May. All our Cross Country learners entered the Spur Trail Series ® . The Spur Trail Series ® is dynamic running on fun trails, namely in Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden, on Meerendal Wine Farm and at Oak Valley. Our learners did us extremely proud receiving several podium finishes during the series. Our athletes also continue to improve their times at the Big Bay Park Run. Our numbers have doubled since last year and we are looking forward to Cross Country growing as a sport. The new athletes have shown that they deserve to be in the squad and a special mention must be made of Amber Taylor (grade 9) as well as Makenna Coleman and Kim Fedrigo (both in grade 10), who have also been placed in the top 20 along with our more experienced Cross Country runners. 113 www.parklands.co.za
