Table Tennis This year Table Tennis was established as a utility option at Parklands College and fast became highly popular amongst our learners. The high number of members resulted in us having to divide the group into girls and boys as well as divide the days so that each grade would have a fair chance of playing. The enthusiasm with which all the players committed to playing Table Tennis soon resulted in strong competition amongst the boys and girls within each of the grades. As time progressed, the willingness to play resulted in Table Tennis being played throughout first and second break, with the Grade 12 boys showing their dominance over the table. With time the skills of the players improved immensely and soon we had Grade 7 and 8 learners challenging and even beating the Grade 12 boys. As time progresses our aim is to develop an internal league so that we can improve the level of external competition. We also aim to offer some coaching on game play, scoring and official rules. Perhaps in the future Table Tennis will become an official sport at Parklands College. Mr Rodwin de Klerk & Mr Thanersen Pillay Examples of such activities and events include the Big Bay Beach Cleanup and Beach Day as well as the World Wetlands Month photography competition. The club gives speeches and shows videos regularly in Friday assemblies to increase awareness of current environmental news and important days, such as decreasing pollution and World Elephant Day. Ivana Schäfer AFRIKAANS KLUB The focus of the Afrikaans Club has been to enhance writing, reading and comprehension skills, as well as to appreciate the beauty of the Afrikaans Language. Many learners attended the weekly creative writing classes, which have enabled them to produce beautiful Afrikaans essays. Learners also had the opportunity to enhance comprehension and reading skills by attending one-on-one sessions with various Afrikaans teachers. The Afrikaans movie club has been as successful, with learners watching and discussing Paljas as well as Lien  se Lankstaanskoene . We are also looking forward to launching our very own Afrikaans Book Club in the near future. Mrs Suzaan Swart 111 www.parklands.co.za
