MakerSpace POETRY SLAM Poetry Slam is a club where like-minded writers and poets come together to collaborate and inspire one another. The atmosphere created in this club is unique, as we refine each other’s writing styles, while encouraging delicate and vulnerable content matter. We always come away feeling slighter, lighter and inspired. This year we have been creating a Motion Poem using our own footage and Apple iMovie technology. We have also had contact with Harry Baker, the current number one spoken-word poet in the world. Poetry Slam is a place where learners can come and express themselves, as well as refine and stretch their writing abilities. Watch this space for Parklands’ up-and-coming poets. Mrs Jessica Biermann FLASHMOB Flashmob is the society for aspiring journalists, camera operators and media magnates. Before 2017, the society has been responsible for developing photography skills, assigning students as photographers at various events. In 2017 this society has grown in leaps and bounds. We have merged with College Avenue and the goal is to have a student-led media production society where students create videos to be shared with the school community. We are currently working with and training camera operators, presenters and video editors. Our videos are currently uploaded to YouTube, and we are in the process of developing a native app specifically for hosting our content. In 2017 Flashmob has also developed a significant social media presence on Instagram, covering and sharing College events for the benefit of its learners. Mr Louis Pienaar PHILOSORAPTOR CLUB At Parklands College, we want to develop students with mature insights by exposing them to some of the most influential thinkers in history. This is the aim of the new philosophy society, Philosoraptor Club. At Philosoraptor Club, students get the opportunity to engage with famous philosophical ideas and arguments. In the first two quarters we addressed metaphysics, epistemology and ethics. The club puts students at the centre of the process, giving them ample opportunity to reflect and discuss philosophy with each other. Mr Louis Pienaar OUTDOOR CLUB The Outdoor Club gives the more adventurous learners at Parklands College the opportunity to explore the majestic beauty the Mother City has to offer. Tourists come from all over the world to experience the imposing mountains, pristine coastline and incredibly diverse fynbos we are so lucky to have right on our doorstep. The Outdoor Club members have certainly been pushed outside their comfort zones with early starts, windy and misty conditions and some steep climbs. Despite this, they keep coming back for more, in the knowledge that the view from the top makes it all worthwhile. Mr Patrick Smith FIRST AID Every year we afford the learners the opportunity to be trained on campus by the Medical Education Centre. Besides our learners aquiring a skill, we also receive eager learners who wish to give back to the College and community by offering their time to be First Aiders on duty at sporting events. To date we have trained over 130 Parkies on how to save a life. The learners also have an opportunity to accumulate service hours if they are working towards the President’s Award or accumulating points towards service colours. The learners at Parklands can certainly be commended for their willingness to serve as we have seen tremendous growth and interest in First Aid volunteers over the past 4 years. Mrs Jolandi Gibson JAM CLUB Guitar Jam Club this year has been all about improving musical improvisation - especially in the blues and jazz genres. The club learner chairperson, Filippo Cortese, took up the reigns and together with Ross Sinclair and Louis Bosch had some truly groovy jam sessions, all while learning new techniques and styles. Jam Club is a wonderful platform for aspiring guitarists to develop their musical skills, while having fun learning together in a group setting. Mr Marcel Erasmus EXCLAMATION Exclamation is a Christian Society at Parklands College. Each week learners from different grades come together to pray, sing worship songs and connect with one another. This year the group has flourished under the guidance of various youth work volunteers from the wider community. One of the highlights of the 2016/17 programme was the Interschool Christian Camp which took place in September last year. The camp was held at the Cape Times Fresh Air Camp in Simonstown, which is a stone’s throw away from Boulders Beach and captures the beautiful sea views of False Bay. The weekend was filled with inspiring and motivational scripture teachings, times of worship and fun physical activities. 109 www.parklands.co.za
