71 Preparatory Libraries “You can find magic wherever you look. Sit back and relax all you need is a book!” – Dr Seuss There certainly is no shortage of magic in our beautiful libraries. The ability of a good story or series to transport the reader is unparalleled – just ask the eager readers who arrive with bright eyes and brimming excitement to choose their next adventure. After months of furious preparation by a team of designers, artisans and librarians who sourced and built furniture, shopped and accessioned books, there was tremendous excitement when the doors of the new library in the Senior Preparatory campus opened. The funky furniture and modern space have tremendous appeal for the patrons who love to spend time there. At the same time, the Junior Preparatory library underwent some subtle changes to cater exclusively for a younger age group, and huggable fluffy toys and lots of picture books abound. At the end of 2015 learners took part in “The School Library Rocks” competition, and we were delighted when it was announced that Samkelesiwe Mbhele had won the second prize of R20 000 to spend on books for the library. What perfect timing for our new venue! The library programme never fails to enthral with topical themes, the latest children’s fiction and events like book sales and dress up days. Book Clubs are fabulous fun for all dedicated bookworms, and two teams have participated in both inter-schools and the international Kids’ Lit Quiz. Book Enquiry This year the Grade Two classes were introduced to a new enrichment activity which Grade Threes have already been enjoying for a couple of years. Book Enquiry is the Parklands College version of P4C (Philosophy for Kids), a wonderfully stimulating activity that grows confidence, self expression, thinking and listening skills, language development and ultimately leads to enhanced academic achievement. Participants are encouraged to think out of the box and share their ideas with their community of enquiry, while asking and discussing challenging questions about the material presented to them. “I love it that we get to make choices and you also hear what other children choose and why. We play different games and I enjoy that. It helps me that when I read a book, I understand what the book is really about.” - Alexandra Bester, Grade 3 Elise Crouse and Faye Little 71 www.parklands.co.za @ParklandsTweet
