2013 has been a busy year for
the IT department at Parklands
College. Let us take a journey
through the year:
Once again, we held our
IT
Expo
and it was another huge
success this year. On 25April,
we saw more than 100 learners
arrive from other schools and
gain exposure to all kinds of
technologies on our campus.
Groups of learners rotated
around practical workshops
where they were exposed to
Animation, GarageBand audio
editing, Computer Aided Drawing
and Scratch programming.We
would like to acknowledge Ural
Jonathan Alp and Pieter Goos
(both in Grade 11) for running the
Scratch workshop and showing
the true abilities of the Parklands
learners.
In the Curie Hall, we had
a number of vendors whose
technologies are implemented at
the College and the participants
were exposed to iPads, Robotics
and 3D Printing, amongst others.
The day ended with the lucky
draw prizes, which varied from
flash drives to an iPad won by
ChristiaanWilliams from Esselen
Park High School inWorcester.
The fantastic prize of on-site iPad
training for teachers was won
by Esselen Park High School as
well. As the goal of the Expo
is to create awareness of IT
technologies, it was deemed a
great success because many of
the learners participating had
never been exposed to these
technologies before.
Furthering our own learners,
we participated in the both the
IT Olympiad
(Programming)
and the
CAT Olympiad
(use
of Microsoft Office technologies).
In the IT Olympiad, we featured
well with Ural Jonathan Alp placing
top in the school, choosing
to program in Java.
A special mention must go to Samuel Berger (Grade 6),
who entered this high school competition and performed
admirably. In the CAT Olympiad, we achieved our best
ever placing, with Ural Jonathan Alp placing top in the
College again and Mikhailan Naicker claiming top spot
amongst the GET.
This year, learners have been working on projects
involving the ICDL (International Computer Driver’s
License) curriculum, which has seen the bulk of the
GET phase pass off modules towards this international
certification. Learners have also had an opportunity to
participate in programming using Scratch, Alice, Python
and Java.We have also seen new life in our Robotics
programme. On the creative side, learners have been
editing film and working in Photoshop, improving their
design and multimedia capabilities.
2013 has picked up where 2012 left off and we look
forward to our continued successes in 2014.
