The Cape Philharmonic Orchestra

A short summary of the work that the CPYO do:

CPO-logoThe core business of the Cape Philharmonic is performing as a symphony orchestra of international standard. However, the nurturing of future musicians and the development of youth music in Cape Town, plus developing new audiences in this country, are of equal importance. The Cape Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (CPYO) was formed in 2003 as part of the CPO’s development and transformation plan. Since 2004 the CPO has also been training young musicians in the Cape Philharmonic Youth Wind Ensemble (CPYWE). Many of the members of these youth orchestras come from previously disadvantaged communities. The members of the professional orchestra are committed to a programme of teaching and training through regular workshops, master classes and one-on-one tuition. The CPYO performs on a regular basis and has appeared several times as a curtain raiser at symphony concerts of the professional orchestra, and on special occasions performs with the CPO. Apart from this mentoring programme, young conductors from local communities are also being trained.
