Pre-Primary Opening and closing times:
A reminder that Christopher Robin Pre-Primary begins at 7:30 and gates will be opened at that time. Should you arrive before 7.30 we request that you remain with your child until the educator arrives. Drop off is between 7:30 and 8:30am. Half Day collection is between 13:00 and 13:30. Aftercare ends at 17:00 sharp. Thank you for your continued support and co-operation.

Educational Toys and Games Drive
We will once again be hosting our Educational Games Drive from the 6‐10 September in the Pre‐Primary reception. This is a wonderful opportunity to stock up on Birthday and Christmas gifts for the little ones. Purchases will be debited to your account.

Bicycle Days
The following learners are invited to bring their bicycles, tricycles or other wheeled things to school on the following days:

Honey Bee’s & Tigger’s House: Wednesday 8 September

Roo’s and Kanga’s House: Friday 17 September

Special Person Day
Our little ones would like to invite their special person to tea and a classroom visit on the follow days from 10:30-11:30: Owl’s, Rabbit’s & Pooh Bear’s: 06 October Edward Bear’s, Roo’s, Kanga’s & Christopher Robin’s: 11 October Piglet’s, Honey Bee’s & Tigger’s: 13 October

Sun Block and Hats
It is getting sunnier… please apply sun block on all exposed parts of your child’s body before they come to school in the morning. We will endeavor to re‐apply sun block to all the children throughout the morning and request that each learner supply a bottle of sun block. A clearly marked hat must remain at school for daily use. The sun is extremely dangerous for young skin, so please help us protect your children. Thank you for your continued co‐operation.

Shuttle Services
Many of our little one’s travel via a shuttle to and from school, sometimes on a daily basis. As you know, these shuttle services are not in any way affiliated to the school and so we are unable to monitor what their policies and procedures are. It is up to you to ensure that you are aware of what these are: for example, whether or not these drivers smoke in their vehicles; whether or not seatbelts are used and what supervision happens in the bus whilst they’re collecting other learners. Please help us keep our little ones safe by keeping in touch with your shuttle service and asking the relevant details.

Modern Dance
The last Modern dance lesson for this quarter will be held on Tuesday 14 September; this will include those dancers that usually dance on a Thursday.

Proposed Dates for 2011
Autumn Quarter: 12 April – 24 June
Winter Quarter: 19 July – 30 September
Spring Quarter: 11 October – 9 December

Parent Corner: Children And Sleep
Sleep is a vital need, essential to a child’s health and growth. Sleep promotes alertness, memory and performance. Children who get enough sleep are more likely to function better and are less prone to behavioral problems and moodiness. That is why it is important for parents to start early and help their children develop good sleep habits. How much sleep should my child get? Each child is different and has different sleep needs. This chart presents recommended hours of sleep that includes naps for children up to five years of age. Age Hours Of Sleep:
0 – 2 months 10.5 – 18
2 – 12 months 14 – 15
1 – 3 years 12 – 14
3 – 5 years 11 – 13
5 – 12 years 10 – 11

Children Need And Thrive On Routine:
The #1 tip for good sleeping habits in children is to follow a nightly routine. A bedtime ritual makes it easier for your child to relax, fall asleep and sleep through the night. Typical Bedtime Routine:

Have a light snack

Take a bath

Put on pajamas

Brush teeth

Read a story

Make sure the room is quiet and at a comfortable temperature

Put your child to bed

Say goodnight and leave

Helpful Tips:
Make bedtime the same time every night. Make bedtime a positive and relaxing experience without TV or videos. According to one recent study, TV viewing prior to bed can lead to difficulty falling and staying asleep. Save your child’s favorite relaxing, non-stimulating activities until last and have them occur in the child’s bedroom. Keep the bedtime environment (e.g. light, temperature) the same all night long.

Encourage Children To Fall Asleep On Their Own:
Have your child form positive associations with sleeping. A child should not need a parent to help him/her fall asleep. One recent study demonstrated that having your child sleep in your bed puts them at risk for suffocation or strangulation. The child who falls asleep on his or her own will be better able to return to sleep during normal nighttime awakenings and sleep throughout the night.

Discourage Nighttime Awakenings :
When you go to your child’s room every time he or she wakes during the night, you are strengthening the connection between you and sleep for your child. Even babies who are held and cuddled when they wake in the middle of the night soon learn to expect this and do not learn to go back to sleep on their own. Except during conditions when the child is sick, has been injured or clearly requires your assistance, it is important to give your child a consistent message that they are expected to fall asleep on their own.

Thank you to all who attended our Prestige Awards last night. We celebrated the wonderful achievements of our young learners in their various disciplines and felt immensely proud that we could share the joy with you. A few comments:

Congratulations on a fantastic event last night. The Prestige Awards really rammed home, for me, the excellence of Parklands College. It threw into stark relief the level of commitment that comes from both the staff and the learners, and highlighted once again that it is no mean feat to get those kids to where they are today. I was also struck by how multi-talented many of the learners are: many won prizes in all major categories which was quite amazing. What is also wonderful, and a superb reflection on the ethos of our school, was that it is ‘cool’ to be in the choir, act, dance, sing, play sport, and excel in all of these facets.

Thank you, Parklands for a lovely awards evening. The guest speaker was a fantastic choice. What incredible insight into following dreams and goal setting; incredible motivational adventure for the students.

Interact Outreach during the month of August
During the month of August, every Monday after school, the Interact club has been visiting an underprivileged community near Morningstar called Wolverivier. We have built some special relationships while helping the children with their homework, playing soccer and serving them food. Thanks for the donation of clothing that we received from Mrs den Bakker. Also a special thanks to the Interacters and their families for the food donations. We would like to return to Wolverivier next quarter and deliver Christmas gifts. So we will be appealing to Parklands College families to donate toys, toiletries and sweets. We want to thank the parents and learners for your on-going support.
Debbie Rowe

Thank you
Thank you to the following families for donating trophies awarded at our Prestige Evening last night:

Ramos family: Junior Rugby Player of the Year
Den Bakker family: “Live the life of an Artist”
Bellwood family: Girls’ Soccer
Herbig family: Rising Star for Junior Drama
Pienaar family: Commitment and Dedication in Tennis
Marais family: Debating
Parklands College Directors: Nic van Zyl Trophy for Adventurous Spirit

Staff news
Happy birthday to Steven Joubert for tomorrow, 4 September.

Associate Principal: Learner Affairs – Stephen Le Feuvre

Important notices

Disciplinary procedures at the Secondary Faculty In light of recent events I have received various questions as to the disciplinary process at Parklands College. Thus, I thought it would make sense to briefly summarise the salient details:

Everything starts with the Code of Conduct that every learner signs when they enter Parklands College. This serves as the basis for all disciplinary action.

It is divided into three categories of offences – 1 being the smallest misdemeanours and 3 being the grievous breaches of the Code.

Generally speaking Category 1 offences are dealt with by class teachers/ grade heads and it involves a demerit/ general detention being issued.

Category 2 and 3 offences may go to the grade head/ phase coordinator and – in serious cases – to me. In many of these cases we often feel it necessary to set up a meeting with parents, learner(s) and ourselves. A letter is drafted that gives details of the offence, quotes the relevant section of the Code of Conduct and gives the course of action. This could include a Principal’s detention, an internal suspension – where the learner is suspended from class but continues to come to school, an external suspension or – in extreme cases – a request to leave the College.

Often we get concerns raised that we did not act on a rumour. Please understand that even teenagers deserve a fair hearing and sufficient evidence against them before they are disciplined. To this end we attempt a thorough investigation before we determine a course of action.

The Code of Conduct does give us the option to ask learners to leave the College if they are guilty of a Category 3 infringement. However, when it comes to these offences where possible we issue an external suspension for a first offence. Generally speaking teenagers are at a critical stage of their lives and they often make very foolish mistakes. I am sure that you, like me, can think of many examples of adults who did something incredibly foolish at school but by matric were model citizens.

Unfortunately, as we experienced this week, some times we are left with no choice but to ask a learner to leave the College with immediate effect.

Co-curricula next week

We have reached that stage in the Winter Quarter when many of the school league fixtures have come to an end. Thus, as of the end of Derby Day all Winter sports matches and practices are over. Some early training will be starting for Summer sports codes such as cricket. The learners involved have been notified.

However, with a couple of exceptions, clubs and societies will be continuing as per normal; particularly paying co-curricula. One exception is that there will be no co-curricula whatsoever this coming Thursday. All staff will be at the Rapewise Prevention through Education training workshop and will thus be unavailable.

Culture

Chess
The chess club has had a busy term. Our top players competed in the five round robins against
surrounding schools and then took part in the Western Province Top Schools Chess Trials where they placed 10th out of the 13 top schools that participated. On Friday, 27 August all the players had the opportunity to play against opponents from CBC St. John’s. Although these were friendly matches, our learners played strategic games and we ended with a score of 11 – 2 in our favour. We are extremely proud of our players. Their great results are a testament to the abilities of the coach and the players’ talent and perseverance. We are convinced that our chess club will continue to go from strength to strength.

Readathon Week
This week was Readathon Week and Parklands College Preparatory once again hosted ‘Hooked on Books’ as they entertained the children by making books come alive. The ‘Travelling Bookshop’ displayed their latest novels and non-fiction books which was keenly supported by our avid readers. Steve Shermin challenged the learners and their parents with his brain teasers at our Living Maths evening. This successful workshop is sure to become an annual event.

Security on Campus
We urge parents to reiterate what we tell the learners at school: do not leave any valuables unattended at any time. A number of cell phones have gone missing from the boys’ change room over the past week. We cannot put surveillance cameras inside a change room which makes it impossible to identify suspects. Learners must use their lockers or hand valuables in at reception for safe-keeping and they have been instructed to comply with our request.

While we would all like to be able to trust everyone around us to have the same respect for property, it unfortunately is not a reality. We are working with the Table View Police and have also secured the services of a private investigator to advise us on security issues.

Despite our frequent reminders we continue to pick up abandoned laptops, school bags and items of clothing in the corridors, on the fields and outside our gates on a daily basis therefore, we urgently require your co-operation in this matter. Kindly discuss the implications of being found in possession of another person’s property with your child and check that items not belonging to them are returned to school.

Thank you

We have been overwhelmed with the support for our SALT bag project. You can still send grocery items to school until Tuesday.

My personal project every year to secure book prizes for Awards Evening is going well at this stage, but please consider a donation if you are a fellow book-lover.

Notices

Changes to practice days and times for this week

All teams will practice as normal (except for the U/16A Netball team who will practice on Tuesday due to the U/19 matches on Monday). There will be practices for all teams in the place of the normal matches on Tuesday and Wednesday. There will not be any co-curricula – unless otherwise arrangements with specific coaches and managers have been made – on Thursday due to the Prestige Awards.

Open Day: Matches against Past Learners

During the last two Saturdays our past pupils, under the captaincy of Sean Todt, have been seen in training for the big match. On Saturday 28 August our past pupils will do battle against our U/19 boys and the Old Girls will take on the U/19 Netball girls. The soccer matches will commence at 10h00 and the netball directly after the soccer. We invite all our learners and parents to come and support and share in this wonderful social occasion.

Grade 10 Baby Project

Congratulations to the Grade 10 learners who completed their Baby Project parenting week! The learners were required to partner up with someone in the grade, or to act as single parents. They kept a log book of all their activities related to caring for the baby – feeding, changing and playing, and drew up a realistic budget of the costs involved in raising a child. The learners did well to manage their academic, co-curricular and sporting commitments with their parenting responsibilities.

The school voted for the Grade 10’s in various categories and the winners are:

Best parenting couple (i.e. most caring, nurturing and consistent) Reese Weaving & Casey Delport

Best single parent – Alex Wierling

Cutest baby (i.e. clothes, accessories, attitude) Mieke-Lene (Willene Theart and Michael Oertel)

Best Baby name – tie for 1st place Jorday Sky (Michaela Masson & Jacinta Correia ) and The Claw (Rowan Torrington)

Parents most in need of parenting skills – Michaela Masson, Morne Smal, Justin Manser, Jason Pienaar and Jonty Britz – for losing their babies and choosing neglectful babysitters!

Matric Indigenous Games

After researching traditional African games this quarter, the Grade 12’s designed, taught and played modified versions of these games as part of their Life Orientation final portfolio requirements. The games were very energetic and well-planned and provided a good opportunity for the Grade 12’s to get out of the classroom for a while to enjoy some sunshine and healthy competition.
Trinity Music Examinations

The following learners need to be congratulated on their performance in the recent Trinity Guildhall Music
Examinations:

Emma Baines: Passed Flute Grade 6 with Merit (81%)

Leslie Wu: Passed Flute Grade 5 with Merit (85%)

Jonathan Alp: Passed Grade 3 Piano with Merit (75%)

Sung-Jun Bok: Passed Grade 4 Piano with Merit (78%)

Wen Chen: Passed Grade 4 Piano (69%)

Reddam U/19 Soccer Tournament

On Saturday Liam Connoway, Luciano da Silva, Dylan Petersen, Jared Paisley, Alexander Tromczynski, Alex Hopking and Pierre Marais represented Parklands in a 5-a-side Soccer tournament at Reddam. Our boys finished 3rd out of 8 teams and we can be so proud of the level of play and the level of sportsmanship exhibited by these soccer players. A special word of congratulations must go to Alex Tromczynski, our U/16 soccer star, who played some outstanding soccer and a big thank you to Jared who came out of retirement and put on the goal-keeping gloves for this occasion.

Pienaar XVI Soccer

This team continues to impress with their sportmanship and commitment to the team. This week they played against much weaker opposition and it was wonderful to see how the boys rose to the occasion. They managed to change their style of play to suite the opponents. The younger Herzlia players as well as the spectators and coaches thoroughly enjoyed the fine show of sportmanship and an entertaining game of soccer. Many of the opposition will never forget this match and having had the opportunity to play against quality players. I would like to extend a very special word of thanks to coach Brad and to Alex Hopking, Liam Connoway, Shiraaz Kader, Keagan Adriaanse and Luciano da Silva who have played in all the matches for the Pienaar XVI. To the rest of the Pienaar squad, Aidan, Godwin, Mitch, Malcolm, Jonty, Justin, Matthew and Tristan it was a real privilege to be your manager. Well done to Godwin for being nominated as player-of-the-match.

U/16 Soccer

The U/16A Soccer boys put on a good show in the first half yesterday against Herzlia here at home. Alex Tromczynski, Karl David, Alex Appollis and Luca Arnoldi were key figures in piling on the pressure until Karl scored the first goal. Nicolas Bowley also did a sterling job in defence and cleared many overhead balls with well-timed and courageous headers. However in the second half our opponents began to pass really well and we eventually lost the match 3-1. Man of the Match: Nicolas Bowley.

U/14 Soccer

This week the U/14 team travelled to Fairmont. In the first half Pano scored two top quality goals and we were most certainly the better team. Unfortunately the second half did not go as well and Fairmont managed to draw equal with a penalty for a hand ball and a goal. Congratulations to Pano for being nominated as man-of-the-match.

U/14 Netball

Well done to the U/14 girls who beat CBC 14 – 2. A special word of congratulations must go to Hilary and Michelle for being nominated as players-of-the-match.
Soccer Days:
Piglet’s Place learners are invited to bring their outdoor soccer, rugby or beach balls to school on Wednesday, 25 August

Absenteeism
Please ensure that you notify Reception when you know that your little one will be away from school. Our attendance records need to be accurate and it is important for us to know if you little one is away travelling, sick or absent for any other reason. Verbal acknowledgment to Rhonda will suffice as she will then be able to note it in our diary and inform the teacher. Thank you so much for your co-operation.

Sun Hats & Sun Block
Please can we ask that you send sun block and a sun hat to school with your little one and don’t forget to label it! It is getting a little warmer and so our little ones are able to spend more time outdoors. Thank you.

Update of information
Parents are requested to ensure that their information is updated and accurate. If you change any of your particulars, please let Rhonda know so that she can ensure that our records are updated accordingly. It is imperative that we have the correct contact details in case of an emergency. Thank you for your co-operation.

Thenga Time
There will be no Thenga Time for the rest of the quarter, our Honey Bees and Piglets hosted our last Thenga Time on Friday 20 August. Thank you so much to you all for assisting in our Thenga Time’s this quarter, either by working at the tables or by supplying yummy treats. We will send out our new timetable for next quarter in a few weeks and will once again be asking for your support to make our Thenga Time treats healthier.

What a week! From a rugby clinic with Western Province Kidz Rugby to the rehearsals for Celebrating Mzansi and finally, the impressive performance of our learners last night. Accolades abound for Ms Morrow and her outstanding team, and for our talented learners – I am so very proud of all of them! Herewith a few reviews from last night’s show:

Just short note to say a “BIG THANKS” for such an entertaining evening! From the music to those fabulous costumes – it was a superb evening and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. Congratulations to you and all those that helped in bringing together all these kids and getting them to sing dance and act so perfectly! BRAVO! BRAVO! BRAVO!!!!!!
The Ramos Family

I would like to congratulate all the staff and children of Parklands College. The show last night was outstanding. The teachers and children must have worked very hard to organise such a wonderful show. Congrats and well done to all.
Maria Fatouros

Congratulations on an outstanding show. This is the best show that we have attended in the 3 years that Samantha has been at Parklands College. I am sure tonight will also be excellent. Good luck and thank you. Samantha is enjoying every moment of it.
Leonie and Mark Muller

Congratulations to you all for a fantastic show! I was entertained from start to finish! The costumes were amazing (Grade 4 animals were my favourite!) and added to the vibes and ‘GEES’ of the whole event! The story flowed so well and I didn’t want it to end! Thank goodness I am on duty tonight so I can experience it all again!!Well done and thank you for all the hard work! I was very proud to be a parent!
LucetteTorbet

AWESOME, AWESOME, AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for telling the story of our people. You took us down memory lane. ENKOSI.
NombuleloBikwani

The show was wonderful, it was so beautiful and exciting seeing all the children together on the stage. BRAVO!!!!
Daniela Braendle

Well done on getting the whole school to perform with just obvious joy in your “Celebrating Mzanzi” festival. I can see that a lot of hard work went into the preparations! Your reward is in the faces of the children and the smiles on the parents’ faces when they left last night.Break a leg tonight!
Sylvia Steyn
Principal: Secondary Faculty

Thank you to everyone involved in the production of Mzansi. It was a wonderful and enjoyable show. Well done and congratulations!
Lorraine Roth

Thank you for a wonderful evening of delightful entertainment by our precious little ones. I know how much hard work this must have been, and they must have stretched your levels of patience to the limit. Break a leg this evening, and I trust you will all have a blessed and restful weekend.
Sue Smid

Thanks for last night – Ryan had a wonderful time! His only “gripe” was that he could not “play” with the shield and the spear!
Gael Baines

I thought I’d let you know that the feedback from our parents dropping off and collecting their little ones today with regards to Celebrating Mzansi last night has been quite phenomenal. Just some examples of what was said:Mrs Pappas said it is the most fun they’ve ever had at a school show and the kids loved it. Mrs Swart said that it was the best show they’ve ever been to that the family had such a laugh and that they loved it.

I had so many moms commenting that I’d run out of space to write all them but I thought I’d pass the ‘mood of it’ on to you. WELL DONE to the team!
Rhonda Qually

Thank you very much for an entertaining evening. The show was delightful and I enjoyed the atmosphere of unity the children portrayed. The songs were lively and I could hear many of the parents singing along. Well done to all involved.
Lee-annSteynberg
Principal: Pre-Primary

As a parent who’s child attends Parklands I am very proud of the school and the teachers who showed so much passion and commitment to putting on such a great concert!
Shaun Stanley

Individual Achievements
Rebecca Crous competed in the KwaZulu Natal inter provincial competition over the weekend where she placed 4th. She skated beautifully and managed to land all her double jumps in both her programmes. She is going from strength to strength and we are very proud of her.

Culture
ChessRound Robin
Our team of chess players: Tristan Oertel; Jack Donde; Devon Crowther; Hyun-Woo Lee; Mia Brown and Daniel Stein has made it through to the WP Top Schools on Saturday 21st August. Good luck to all our team!

General
Open Day
We welcome you to attend our Open Day on Saturday 28 August. Please extend this invitation to all your family and friends who may be interested in viewing Parklands College and Christopher Robin Pre-Primary.

W.P. Rugby Kidz are considering Parklands College as host to run their weekly programme as from 2011. Currently they are running skills clinics at Sunningdale Sports Club every Friday from 15:45 to 16:45.

Please visit www.wpschoolsrugby.co.za and sign up for this amazing development programme. The programme will assist our future rugby stars in improving their skills and ensuring the effective implementation of rugby at the College to establish us as a leading rugby school in our area.

Seasonal Head Lice
Unfortunately, once again we have to inform you that we have a few cases of head lice on the school campus. Lice are transferred mainly through close physical contact and the sharing of personal items such as brushes, combs, hats or bed linen. Anyone can get lice, and the condition is HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS. It is important to note that that lice infestation is NOT related to personal hygiene.
What are head lice?
Head lice are small, wingless insects. They settle in a person’s hair where it is warm and dark. Adult lice are very small, measuring 2-3 millimetres in length. They live close to the surface of the scalp and move from one area of skin to another by transferring from hair to hair. They’re normally greyish-brown in colour and move away if exposed to light if the hair is parted. Lice can settle anywhere on the head, but tend to congregate at the roots of the hair behind the ears, at the nape of the neck and on the crown. The eggs commonly called nits, are creamy, oval structures about the size of a pinhead and are firmly attached to the hair shaft. They are more visible than adult lice. Once hatched, the young lice start feeding on the host by piercing the skin and sucking the blood using specially adapted mouth parts.

Treatment

Purchase a shampoo or cream rinse specifically designed for this purpose from your chemist. Ensure that all brushes, linen, etc are treated to prevent further re-infestation. NO child may return to school until ALL the lice and eggs have been removed. Recommended products are: LYCLEAR, QUALLADO or PARA SPRAY, PARALICE does not contain Benzene
Tea Tree is a herbal application

The Inter-house Fashion Show was held on Friday 13 August 2010. It required special teamwork as the houses were paired into two teams with Harvard and Yale working together and Oxford and Cambridge combining their expertise. The teams were instructed to present a fashion show of clothing that they had made themselves and had the option of using various cultural aspects. The fashion show was planned around the theme “Spirit of Africa”.

The House Captains worked extremely hard and should be commended for their innovative approach and dedication to the project. Harvard and Yale won the prize for the best presentation and Cambridge and Oxford won the prize for the most creative and theme-related clothing.

The House Prefects of 2010, Geena da Silva and Tennelle Essop are extremely proud and would like to congratulate everyone involved. Thank you to the parents who assisted or attended.

Missing property register

In order to assist us in investigating learners’ property going missing, we have created a register that will be kept at reception. It would assist us in investigating and reporting back to parents if all incidences of misplaced items are reported at a central point, with accuracy of time and place where.

Open Day: Matches against Past Learners
During the last two Saturdays our past pupils, under the captaincy of Sean Todt, have been seen in training for the big match. On Saturday 28 August our past pupils will do battle against our under 19 boys and the Old Girls will take on the under 19 netball girls. The soccer matches will commence at 10h00 and the netball directly after the soccer. We invite all our learners and parents to come and support and share in this wonderful social occasion.

First Aid
On Saturday, 14 August, Parklands College hosted the Advanced First Aid Course. Although it was a 6 hour training session, it was a pleasant experience and the time literary flew by. The morning started with the theory of the human organs and then progressed to sharing related stories of personal experience, strapping people up (leaving them unable to move) and carrying them down the stairs and occasionally tickling them. The day ended with a practical test.

Congratulations to the following learners and staff member for completing their First Aid Advanced certification on Saturday.

Some of the participants had this to say about the course:

The first aid training was great!! We learnt about strapping people to a board in case of spine, head, or neck injury, which was fun…except i was strapped first, and turned upside down, but it was fun =)
Isabella Correira

Well first aid training was lots of fun on Saturday, the vibe was great, our trainer was good and he kept us entertained as well as taught us many skills. Strapping each other up to stretchers was lots of fun, great team work was used. Had a fun day with great people and thank you to Mrs Pienaar for making the day even better.

Visit to University of Stellenbosch

Several Grade 11 learners enjoyed an outing to the University of Stellenbosch on Friday 30 July for their annual Open Day. It was an opportunity to visit stalls from various academic faculties and departments and to soak up some of the student culture on this beautiful campus.

Thank you to Mr Joubert, Mr Lewis and Mrs Pienaar for joining the learners on this outing.

Some comments from the learners who attended the Open Day:

I really enjoyed my visit to Stellenbosch because the people were very friendly. They offer equal opportunities to both foreigners and South Africans, so this gives me a path to achieve my goal of studying Medicine.
Jeanne Nkunda

The Stellenbosch outing was a really great experience. We had a lot of fun and were able to learn a lot about the future careers we would like to follow!! We also had an opportunity to see how the students are and see a bit of the campus.
Kathleen Kehoe

We had about an hour or two to go and have a look around the campus, so we decided to go and have a look at the centre where the students gathered for lunch. There were various shops and stalls inside and upstairs, there was a room in which different jobs and studying options were advertised. This was to show what the University offered and how one would apply etc. There were hundreds of students in the centre and after a few minutes of losing our bearings, we made our way back to the bus, and enjoyed our tour of the University.
Brett Eloff

I thoroughly enjoyed the Stellenbosch Open Day. It had a really welcoming vibe and gave us each all the information we needed for the different courses we were interested in. I think so often we get information about the university as a whole but it was far more beneficial to experience the campus itself and the different faculties that it has to offer.
Kirsten Patterson

It was an awesome experience visiting Stellenbosch University. There was this different kind of vibe around and it was great seeing the different people as well as all the career opportunities that were offered there. The food was really good and it’s a really big campus.
Nakita Breytenbach

The vibe was really cool, and the people there seemed nice. The food they sell at the little shops downstairs was AMAZING! Bar one muffins The campus was a lot bigger than I expected

Sport feedback from Tracy Pienaar

Pienaar XV1

What a delightful group of soccer players! I would like to congratulate Shiraz and the boys on their dedication and commitment. It is wonderful to manage such a well-organised group with such obvious passion for the game. A very special word of welcome to the new members of the team and especially Malcolm Hodgson, who impressed with his goal keeping abilities. Special mention must be made of Godwin Ijieh who scored his very first goal for the Pienaar XV1 and Liam Connoway with his tireless efforts in defence.

U 19 Soccer

Our under 19 boys travelled to Elkanah on Wednesday and were unlucky to loose 2 – 1. We had many opportunities to score but could not find the net.

U 16 Soccer

Although due to a late kick-off we were unable to field a ‘full strength’ side, the under 16A team did remarkably well against a well-drilled Pinelands team. In what would prove an excellent and tight encounter, the 16’s narrowly lost 4-3. Parklands direct style of play often proved too much for the Pineland’s defence; most of our goals coming from long balls down the middle, with fantastic finishing from us. With a bit more effort and application I feel that this could be a very successful team.

U 14 Soccer

It was good to see our under 14 team dressed and ready for their match on Tuesday against Table View High and to welcome back some of the players who have been unavailable due to injury. Although the boys tried hard, they were unable to beat the opposition.

Girl’s Soccer

On Wednesday the soccer team played against Herzlia. Both Parklands and Herzlia played well and this highly contested match ended in a 0 – 0 draw. Thank you to Anisa Kedama, the striker, who helped out in the goals for part of the match and a special word of congratulations to Taylah King on her nominations as player of the match.

Netball

The netball girls did not play any matches this week. The under 14 and under 16 A girls will be playing a friendly match against CBC at Parklands and the under 19 girls, winners of their league, will be playing against the Old Girls on Open Day on 28 August in preparation for their play off matches which will be held on Saturday 11 September 2010.

Cricket

Congratulations to the following under 12 and under 13 boys who have been selected to participate in a Pro 20 cricket tournament from the 27 – 29 September in Worcester during the first few days of the school holidays.

UCT Invitational Mathematics Challenge 2010
Top Performer of Parklands College

As a follow-up to the UCT Mathematics Competition held in April, the top performers of all Cape Town schools were invited to write the UCT Invitational Mathematics Challenge. A total of 135 accepted the challenge on Saturday 31 July. The high turnout showed the enthusiasm and commitment of these top Mathematics learners.

Ural Alp wrote the very challenging paper which was based on a recent Dutch Junior Mathematics Olympiad paper. He came second in his age group and we wish to congratulate him on this wonderful achievement.

Another appeal for Book and Trophy donations

With our major awards evenings coming up, we invite parents to donate trophies or book prizes. You may elect to donate a traditional trophy, but we also welcome any mounted creative options. The following suppliers have proven to be most reliable.

Toker Brothers in Goodwood: www.tokerbros.co.za
Prestige in Randberg: www.prestigeawards.co.za

Although Prestige is based in Gauteng, they have a wider variety at better prices and deliver quickly.

We would like to make a special appeal for trophies for Rugby:

Junior Rugby Player of the Year
Most Improved Rugby Player

If you prefer to donate a book prize, you may drop the books at reception. You can also donate an Exclusive Books voucher or give us permission to bill your account with a specified amount. Kindly let me know at your earliest convenience: ssteyn@parklands.co.za

Measles
Please be advised that we have had a reported case of measles. Measles is a highly contagious respiratory infection. It causes a total-body skin rash and flu-like symptoms, including a fever, cough, and runny nose. While measles is probably best known for the full-body rash it causes, the first symptoms of the infection are usually a hacking cough, runny nose, high fever, and red eyes. The measles rash typically has a red or reddish brown blotchy appearance, and first usually shows up on the forehead, then spreads downward over the face, neck, and body, then down to the arms and feet. The most important thing you can do to protect kids from measles is to have them vaccinated according to the schedule prescribed by your doctor.

Thenga Time
We will send out our new timetable for next quarter in a few weeks and will once again be asking for your support to make our Thenga Time treats healthier! It is difficult for our little ones to say no to sweets when they are on sale on a Friday, so please can we ask that theseare omitted. Thank you once again for your support in this matter.

Open Day
We are once again welcoming you to our Open Day on Saturday 28 August. Please extend this invitation to all your family and friends who may be interested in viewing Parklands College and Christopher Robin Pre‐Primary; of which we are so proud.

Thenga Time
Thank you to all the mom’s who kindly assisted with Rabbit’s and Kanga’s House Thenga Time on Friday 6 Aug.

Next Thenga time is on Friday 20 August and will be hosted by Honey Bee’s House and Piglet’s Place; if you are able to assist, please notify Jayne and Ingrid and arrive at 9.45 for the cake sale to begin at 10.00. Thank you.

Congratulations
We would like to extend our warm congratulations to the Marais f amily on the arrival of Teegan’s new little brother Roarke; who was born on Sunday 8 August.

Adenovirus
Please note that we have had a confirmed case of Adenovirus in the Pre‐Primary. Please be on the
look out for telltale symptoms, which includes a high temperature. Adenovirus often infects the airways – this can appear as a “cold” (e.g., sore throat, sneezing, runny nose, cough, headache, chills), croup, or bronchitis. The illness is contagious and usually lasts three to five days, but serious infections can last weeks.

Lost Property
Please note that lost property is placed on a table outside the front door every Friday, do have a look through the items as they are all unlabeled and we seem to have acquired quite a few warm tops recently. Any unclaimed clothing that has not been labelled will be donated to a charity during the school holidays.

Electronic Items
Please can we ask that expensive electronic items such as iPods and game consoles, not be brought to school. Thank you f or co-operation.

Thank You
A warm thank you to all of you; who so generously donated to the ‘Home of Hope’ and ‘Little Lambs’ charities during the past two weeks. Both charities were delighted and over-whelmed by your generosity. Extra goodies that these charities were not able to make use of , we donated to the Melkboscare Centre.
Thank you.

Bicycle Days
The Roo’s House and Kanga’s House learners are invited to bring their bicycles, tricycles or other wheeled things to school on the following days:
Friday 20 Aug
Friday 3 Sep
Friday 17 Sep
Parents Corner
Children need our help to become readers for life. They need encouragement and motivation to develop an interest in reading which will start in infancy and reach far into their futures. Language and literacy are very important to a developing child and an appreciation of literature should be encouraged and stimulated from a young age. Each child needs to have someone who will be able to nurture a love of books within them and encourage an interest in literature of a wide variety. Two special ways to foster this love include reading stories at bedtime and exposing our little ones to the joys of a library.

Milnerton Library Story Time: Thursday 16:00
021 550 1131

Blouberg Library Story Time: Monday or Wednesday 15:30
021 554 1641

Tableview Library Story Time: Tuesday 10:00
021 557 8995

Book Lounge: Saturday 11:00
Venue: 71 Roeland Street, Gardens
Cost: Free
www.booklounge.co.za

Exclusive Books (Kloof Street)
Every second Saturday
021 426 2977

Folio Books: Newlands
foliobooks@storm.co.za
021 685 7190

A special thank you to all our parents who have donated books to the Pre-Primary library and in particular to those little ones who make a book donation on their birthday. These books are very precious to us and once they have received their special donation label, it is wonderful to see the joy on the little ones faces when their teacher reads the book to the class.

Thank you for enriching our library and bringing such happiness to our avid little readers.
