Secondary Faculty Weekly Memo 9 Sept

September 13, 2011

August Awareness Month is one of my favourite times at the College and I am pleasantly surprised every year by the enthusiasm of our teenagers to throw their weight into the various projects.  Just look at what we have collected in one month:

●   Bread tags = 8,66kg – These will be passed onto Wyona Ramsauer, who recycles them for money that is used to buy wheelchairs for the underprivileged.
●   22 black bags full of clothes and toys were donated to the swap shop in Du Noon run by Beyond Education.
●   370 kg of empty cold drink tins, which brought us R581,34 in aid of Lindi Walters, a baby in need of a cochlear transplant.
●    We filled 75 tins for the Reach for a Dream Foundation.
●  With the help of the Pre-Primary school we filled 124 SALT bags which were donated to Beyond Education in Du Noon and to clinics in Phoenix

After ending August Awareness month on such a high, we started Spring with a civvies day in aid of SPCA and raised R1375.

We also donated 30 old, but in full working order, computers to Building Bridges Nationwide.  These are being installed in a school in Du Noon.  Building Bridges Nationwide’s vision is a Safe, High Employment and Prosperous South Africa by developing ‘Bridge Building Communities’ nationwide. Parklands College is committed to playing our part in educating our learners about our social responsibilities.  Parents in business who are interested can click on the following link for more information:

Interact Club Report on August Social Awareness Month @ Parklands College

This year we have surpassed the collections of previous years. We also enlisted the help of the Pre- Primary and Preparatory Schools in our collections. We received 22 SALT bags from the Pre-Primary and many empty cold drink cans from the Preparatory School after they completed their giraffe sculpture.

The Interact Club with the help of the Class Representatives managed to encourage all Parklands learners to open their hearts and give generously. As a result we were able to achieve the following: R1375,00 for SPCA on Spring Civvies Day as well as 8,67kg of plastic bread tags, 124 SALT bags filled with foodstuff for HIV patients, 75 tins of coins for Reach for a Dream and 22 black bags full of clothes and toys for Beyond Education’s Swap Shop in Du Noon.

“Yes we CAN!!!” was the slogan used by Secondary learners to collect empty cold drink cans for recycling. Thanks to the Preparatory and Secondary learners we were able to collect 370kg of metal. At R1,20 per kg we are able to donate R581,34 to Lindi Walters, born on the 4th of May this year and in need of a cochlear implant.

During September, our new Ambassadors of Hope; Busisiwe Phillips (Grade 11) and Robyn Africa (Grade 11) will be selling Sunflower bandanas at R20 each to raise money for the Sunflower Fund’s bone marrow registry. Thank you to all the Parkland’s Families and Staff who gave so generously and well done to the Class Representatives!
