Weekly Round-Up 16 July

July 16, 2010

Welcome back to life before the World Cup!  It has been a phenomenal time in our country’s history and a privilege for our learners to be part of the celebrations in many ways. Special congratulations must once again go to our Reporter’s Club who did us proud with all the coverage they received on television. Redi Direko from 702 managed to interview Itumeleng Mabusha and their World Cup movies can be viewed on web – ischoolafrica.com.

Looking ahead, we still have many highights on the school calendar to look forward to.  Our formal matric ball takes place tonight and we would love to see many parents and learners lining the red carpet to see the matrics arrive in style, for pre-drinks in the College Hall.  The matrics will start arriving at 17:30 and proceedings inside the hall, of which attendance is by invitation only, will commence at 18:45.

Parent-Teacher Meetings

An important reminder: Parent-Teacher Meetings will be taking place on Monday night from 17:30 to 19:30. As a result of the ongoing rehearsals for the Musical production, this will NOT take place in the hall as usual but rather in rooms 8, 30 and 31 (the Art and Dance Class rooms). Please will you take the time to come meet with us. We are keen to give you feedback on the progress of your child.

A lot of work has gone into this production and we would like to invite you all to come and enjoy this feel- good musical with your friends and family.  Please support us by booking your tickets today through Computicket.

Staff news

This week we hosted 12 schools for an U/19 World Cup Soccer Tournament and participated in soccer tournaments and netball matches at other schools.  Our Run/Walk Club started with Mr Frederick and a small group of very enthusiastic runners braved the cold and went out on the fields to try out a brand new programme.  We would like to thank Mr Frederick for his initiative and invite learners to come and join him on a Wednesday afternoon. A special word of thanks to Mr April and the support staff for their help with readying the fields for our Soccer Tournament and to all our coaches for a wonderful start to the quarter.

Soccer

With the World Cup Soccer hype and the blazing vuvuzelas it is not surprising that school sport has been very focused on soccer during the past few months. Two of the Girls’ Soccer teams and the U/14, U/16 and U/19 boys all participated in soccer tournaments during the last few weeks. Our girls played at Oude Molen during the holidays and the junior team came 4th and the senior team achieved 7th position.

Our boys played at various venues on Wednesday and Thursday and the results are as follows:

  • U/19 team reached the plate final and unfortunately play was suspended due to bad light
  • U/16 team reached the semi finals and lost to the team that eventually won the tournament
  • U/14 team beat Elkanah and then lost to Reddam who eventually won the tournament

Netball

Our Netball Girls travelled to Atlantis on Thursday. Congratulations to the U/19 team who remain unbeaten after their 19 – 7 win.  Unfortunately both the U/14 and U/16 Girls lost this week (their first loss of the season).

Thank you to Madame Bailly and her team for running a very successful Winter School.  We trust that this has benefited our grade 12 learners in preparation for their matric examinations later this year.
